Photos: The area around the Sims Store Museum and Kathy getting a few zzzzz at the aqueduct just down the road from the Museum. No, that is not an outhouse. It's a replica of a Lock House.
Mile 16.12 – we are at the Sims Store Museum. Unfortunately it is closed. The most we can do is take pictures and use the outhouse. As we leave this area on the banks of the old canal, the surface seems a little better, not quite as much stone dust. We stopped at the canal aqueduct in Erie Canal Park in Camillus. Work will start next week to restore it and should finish in 2009. I will come back to see it…by car
Condition of the road is getting better and better. Shortly after the aqueduct the trail became on-road heading to Fairmount. Somehow we totally missed the town of Fairmount. We should have taken the road to the right. It probably would have taken us down into town. So it looks like we are headed to Solvay.
20.67 – welcome to Solvey. We hit the Solvay Convenient (that is spelled correctly) and Deli at mile 20.94. We had no choice but to stop here even though it is pretty much a whistle stop. The Convenient store in the front was dirty and the Deli in the back wasn’t much better. It’s amazing what you will do when you are desperate! We had burgers (which were actually very good) with fries and a cold drink. All for $4.99.
We were able to get directions from a UPS driver about how to get through Syracuse into DeWitt. But first, I needed to cash a Traveler’s Check. The Convenient store person would not take it. Acted like I had leprosy! We found the Solvey Bank and even though I had proper identification and signed the check as I was instructed, they still made a phone call (to someone) and then required me to place my thumb print on the back of the check. I didn’t mind that they were being so careful, I just found it quite amusing.
22.50 – we are on the outer limits of Syracuse
