Day Four – Tuesday, September 9

Expectations: Canaltown B&B has a candlelight breakfast.

After leaving Canaltown we will continue east through the towns of Port Gibson, Newark (we stayed at the Quality Inn in 2004 – low quality!), Lyons, Lock Berlin, Clyde (for lunch), Montezuma (if we get lost anywhere it will be trying to get around the Wildlife refuge without going through it – no bikes allowed), Port Byron (should be stopping here overnight, but the only B&B no longer in business), Centerport, Weedsport where we will stay in a motel for a change.

This day messes up our mileage. We go 5 miles more today, but 5 miles less tomorrow. Our ride will begin on stone dust and transfer to Rte 31 on-road. In Port Byron we are back on stone dust to Centerport where we go on-road again to Weedsport.

We had a delightful candlelight breakfast at 8 a.m. as Barbara Leiston related a lot of history of the house and the town. She also presented Kathy and I with woven hot dish mats. She makes them herself and gives them to all their guests.

Left Canaltown at 9:35 – way off schedule. It had rained all night, and, because our bikes had been outside, they were soaking wet. We are wearing our ponchos as we head back to Aqueduct Park to pick up pathway. Mileage at beginning of path is 0.90. Finding the path at the Palmyra Marina is tricky. It probably would have been easier if we came down Division St. right off. We leave Palmyra on stone dust path, but in Newark it changes to on-road, State Route 31, Bike Route 5.
