We then went to the Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum. It wasn’t supposed to be open, but the nice lady said that so many people kept stopping in she kept opening up. We saw the artifacts connected with the canal boats, the dry docks, replica of a stall that would house the mule as well as the Hoggie. The pronunciation ranges from Hogie (long o and hard g – just like the sandwich) to Hah-Gee. These were the boys who drove the teams along the tow path. I think they got their name from how they called to the mules to go right or left—Haw and Gee.
Our lodging for the night is at ANGELS NEST B&B, which is a converted convent. Restaurants nearby for supper. We dropped the van at Hertz at Griffiss Air Force Base and rode our bikes back to the B&B, stopping at Denny’s for supper.. The base was realigned for civilian and non-combat purposes in 1995. It is now home to the Griffiss Business and Technology Park, and it is still home to the Rome Research Site of the Air Force Research Lab. At its peak, the base was the largest employer in Oneida County, New York.
The following photos were taken on our way to Rome and then at Angels Nest.
